Review: "San Anto: Pride of the Southside'

Alex Rubio and Vincent Valdez, at Museo Alameda

Today was an amazing day for getting out. In these first days of January, the leaves on the trees are still falling off, a warm breeze was whipping them around, and its in the 70s. A friend and I left our cars in the El Mercado parking lot and strolled down to The Alameda, for yet another great exhibit. Maybe you've already read the story behind Vincent Valdez and Alex Rubio-- the duo that created a stunning color-drenched bite of southside life, after Rubio mentored Valdez in his teenage years, fostering the creative side that turned into an immensely talented artist. Standing before a huge wall mural of a melting raspa truck, "El Callejero", I felt like I was taken on a journey past Dr. Seuss, past Salvador Dali and planted down in a surreal memory of childhood, where ice was that magical Coke-bottle blue and everything was in technicolor. Rubio paints in a way that feels free, unrestricted, even humorous. His trio of images, "Street Altar (El Quarto, La Vela, El Duro)", is like getting off a carnival ride when everything is a little off-kilter, a little screwy, and woah, the quart of Lone Star beer, the religious candle and the Krylon spray paint are all melting! Everything is drenched in color like a topography map, soaked with warmth. In contrast, Vincent Valdez, his former assistant and apprentice, creates gritty meticulous paintings that render life-like portraits against stunning city-scapes and vast emptiness in space. I think my favorite piece was 'Rubio' done by Valdez. The artist's portrait of Rubio was like a deeply personal fingerprint... how Rubio appears before him, as well as a statement. One man standing alone, with the city dwarfed behind him as his weight and energy carries him. I plan to go back again to see this exhibit with a little more time. It was very enjoyable and a great way to start off the new year! I highly recommend the exhibit, 'San Anto' as a must-see.
